Welcome back Solorio students and families to the 2017-2018 school year. It is hard to believe, but we are starting our 8th year at Solorio. “Tomorrow belongs to those who prepare today.” These words by Malcolm X remind us of the importance of working hard. Our school’s core values of Integrity, Commitment, Compassion, and Reflection characterize the Solorian learner’s life. Dedication to these values has led to many achievements and accolades over the years. We are proud that Solorio was recently named one of the best high schools in Chicago, but we strive to continue improving. We aspire to surpass last year’s achievements and further raise our expectations for ourselves and our students. Whether it is in academics, athletics, fine arts or extracurricular programs, Solorio continues to make great strides. I trust our entering freshman will not only embrace Solorio Sun Warrior school spirit on the field but in the classroom as well. Welcome to the family.

Steady, positive improvements in academic achievement, student engagement, and parent satisfaction are hallmarks of all AUSL-managed CPS schools. You will find reports for Solorio Academy High School to the right.
Solorio Academy High School is named in honor of Eric Solorio (1979-2006), a former member of the Chicago Police Department’s elite antigang unit. Solorio died in 2006 at age 26 nearly a month after his squad car went out of control during a chase. Friends and family say there was a constant urgency about him, who since childhood searched for ways to help others. Today, we honor Officer Solorio’s life by working hard to educate ourselves and make our community a better place by dedicating ourselves to serving others.
Solorio Academy High School opened in 2010 to address enrollment challenges caused by the rapid growth in student population on the Southwest Side. The building is “Silver” level certified under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design schools’ rating system, and includes a green roof covering 40 percent of the building.
The Solorio building was the first to implement CPS’s Urban Model High School (UMHS) design and was part of the Modern Schools Across Chicago (MSAC) program. The building contains more than 200,000 square feet and includes science, computer, visual and performing arts classrooms, as well as a library, a gymnasium, a swimming pool and playing fields and tennis courts.
The school opened with grade 9 and has added a grade each school year. In June of 2014, Solorio celebrated its first graduating class. The school has 40 classrooms and serves 1084 students.
AUSL (Academy for Urban School Leadership) is a Chicago nonprofit school management organization that creates schools of excellence by developing highly effective teachers and transforming educational outcomes for students in the lowest performing schools.
Chicago Public Schools (CPS) turned over management of Solorio Academy High School to AUSL in 2010 as a training academy. Training Academies are neighborhood schools in which residents are trained. These schools are not turnarounds but were opened with the purpose of developing highly effective teachers for the challenging urban environment.
AUSL is committed to to providing all AUSL students with a quality education to prepare them for college and career.
[En Español Abajo] “We are excited to announce that we have received a Level 1+ rating from Chicago Public Schools. We are proud to be one of the select few community neighborhood high schools to be credited with the highest rating issued to schools. According to CPS, Level 1+ is defined as a “nationally competitive school with opportunity to share best practices with others.” It is typically attained at the high school level only by the district’s selective-enrollment high schools, according to CPS data.
I am so proud of all of the work that our students, parents, teachers, and staff have done to beat the odds and receive a Level 1+ school rating. Together, we defied the odds and are delivering our community with an excellent educational choice that is second to none. Thank you for doing your part. We are doing it again this year but we are #doingitevenbetter.” -Principal Iturralde
